Monitoring the health of our coastal wetlands – the Wetland Index: Case studies across the Mediterranean

The Wetland Index (WI) is a tool that aims at monitoring the health of wetlands using a simple, cost-efficient, and replicable method. The assessment, based on the IBA monitoring framework, can be undertaken each year even with limited resources. The scoring approach enables the situation to be easily compared over the years: what the threats are, what the state of the site is, in terms of habitat or species population changes, what are the conservation actions taken at the site, and how each of these factors evolves over time.

Webinar “Wetlands & Climate Change: Actions to protect blue carbon ecosystems and peatlands for mitigation and adaptation”

The webinar is organised by the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands to promote dissemination and use of recent outputs prepared by the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Convention: Policy Brief No.5 on restoring drained peatlands, which is complemented by global guidelines for peatland rewetting and restoration (Technical Report 11) and a Briefing Note (No. 11) providing hands-on methodological guidance for restoring drained peatlands; as well as Briefing Note 12 on the contribution of blue carbon ecosystems to climate change mitigation.
