Factsheets on wetland restoration in the Mediterranean
2 July 2025
Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that provide essential services such as water filtration, flood control, and support for biodiversity, etc. Unfortunately, these valuable areas are increasingly under threat due to human activities, climate change, and pollution. Wetland restoration is a critical tool in mitigating these threats, and it plays a key role in preserving these ecosystems for future generations.
In this context, the MedWet Managers Network encourages its members to share their restoration efforts, which can inspire others and contribute to broader conservation goals.
As part of its ongoing mission to highlight the successes and initiatives of its members, the MedWet Managers Network has recently produced two factsheets. These documents showcase the wetland restoration efforts at two significant sites: the Azraq Wetland Reserve in Jordan and the Salina Nature Reserve in Malta. They provide an in-depth look at the challenges facing these wetlands, the state of the sites before and after restoration, the objectives and impacts of the restoration activities, the beneficiaries of these actions, the specific restoration methodologies employed, and the valuable lessons learned throughout the process.
These restoration factsheets are an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the practical aspects of wetland restoration. They not only demonstrate the effectiveness of these efforts but also highlight the broader benefits of revitalizing vital ecosystems. The success stories of Azraq and Salina serve as good examples of the importance of collective action and reinforce the need for continued restoration efforts across the Mediterranean.
