Welcoming Platja de Torredembarra i Creixell to the MedWet Managers Network

22 October 2026

The MedWet Managers Network warmly welcomes Platja de Torredembarra i Creixell, a 62-hectare coastal saline wetland in Catalonia, Spain, jointly managed by the Government of Catalonia’s Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition and the Grup d’Estudi i Protecció dels Ecosistemes Catalans-Ecologistes de Catalunya (GEPEC-EdC). The site is locally known as Muntanyans in Torredembarra and Gorg in Creixell.

A Coastal Wetland of High Biodiversity

Located behind coastal dunes, the wetland combines salt marshes and Juncus communities, providing important habitats for diverse flora and fauna. It supports up to 250 bird species, including around 30 shorebird species, and provides nesting habitat for the Kentish plover (Anarhynchus alexandrinus), whose breeding is actively monitored and protected.

Nature, Heritage and Community

The wetland contributes to coastal protection, flood risk reduction and local well-being. It also has strong cultural links with the local fishing community, reflecting the traditional use of wetland resources. Boardwalks, trails, interpretation panels and the Cal Bofill environmental centre support public access and environmental education. Local volunteers contribute through guided tours, clean-ups, invasive species removal and bat monitoring.

Conservation and Management

Current management focuses on dune and wetland restoration, visitor management, habitat protection and ecological monitoring. Future priorities include improving ecological connectivity, restoring natural water flows, addressing sediment contamination and strengthening the site’s formal management framework. An important challenge is restoring the high salinity that should characterise the salt marshes, which is a key focus of ongoing management efforts.

Joining the MedWet Network

Through the MedWet Managers Network, the team will share experience in dune restoration, citizen engagement, volunteer coordination and legal approaches to conservation, while seeking collaboration on salt marsh management, sediment contamination, environmental monitoring and project development.

We warmly welcome Platja de Torredembarra i Creixell to the MedWet Managers Network and look forward to strengthening Mediterranean cooperation for coastal wetland conservation.
